As Africa continues to embrace digital transformation, protecting digital identity and personal information is becoming increasingly important.

Digital identity is now part of everyday life, from accessing government services and banking to mobile money, healthcare and online platforms. While these technologies create new opportunities, they also introduce risks such as identity theft, fraud, unauthorised access and data breaches.

Strong identity security is therefore an important part of cybersecurity.

Organisations need to know who is accessing their systems, what information they can access and whether that access is appropriate. Strong authentication, secure access controls and continuous monitoring can help reduce these risks.

Privacy is equally important. Organisations must carefully consider what personal information they collect, how it is stored, who can access it and how long it should be retained.

Artificial intelligence is also changing the identity and privacy landscape. AI can help detect unusual activity and fraud, but it can also create new challenges for identity verification and cybersecurity. This makes it important to consider identity, privacy and AI security together.

Building digital trust requires collaboration between government, regulators, businesses, technology providers, cybersecurity professionals and citizens.
